Looking for Guidance: The Best Ways to Arrange Research Notes in Inkdrop

Hi Inkdrop Community,

I’ve recently started using Inkdrop as my primary tool for managing research notes, and I’m loving its simplicity and markdown-based approach. However, as my notes grow in number, I’m finding it challenging to keep everything organized and easy to retrieve. I’d love to hear how you all structure your notes to maintain efficiency and clarity.

Specifically, I’m looking for advice on the following:

  1. Tags vs. Notebooks: Do you rely more on tags, notebooks, or a combination of both? How do you decide which to use?
  2. Note Naming Conventions: Do you have a specific way of naming your notes to make them easier to search later?
  3. Linking Notes: How do you handle linking related notes? Do you use backlinks, or is there another method you’ve found effective?
  4. Archiving Old Notes: For older notes that you don’t use often but don’t want to delete, what’s the best way to archive them without cluttering your workspace?
  5. Plugins: Are there any plugins or customizations you’ve found particularly helpful for note organization?

I’d also appreciate any general tips or insights you have about workflows that have worked well for you in Inkdrop. If it helps, I mainly use Inkdrop for academic research and personal knowledge management.

Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise! I’m looking forward to learning from your experiences and hopefully refining my own system.

Hi Ellis,

Welcome to Inkdrop.

There are some discussion topics on the forum here, please check it out:

And I also wrote a guide on organizing notes:

Note Naming Conventions: Do you have a specific way of naming your notes to make them easier to search later?

I don’t have any specific rules for naming notes.
You don’t have to include every keyword in the note titles, as Inkdrop can also find notes with tags as keywords.

Linking Notes: How do you handle linking related notes? Do you use backlinks, or is there another method you’ve found effective?

I take notes per issue as I wrote here:

So, related issues are linked to the note and I sometimes refer to them via backlinks.

Archiving Old Notes: For older notes that you don’t use often but don’t want to delete, what’s the best way to archive them without cluttering your workspace?

I set the note status to ‘Completed’ to get rid of finished issues from the note list.
It is mentioned in the article above as well.

I hope they are helpful to you!
