You may see a SmartScreen warning on Windows for a while

The code signing certificate for Windows distributions has been renewed

Windows requires .exe files to be signed with a code signing certificate to ensure that the publisher is verified and correct.
When a user attempts to launch an .exe file from an unverified publisher, Windows displays a SmartScreen warning like the one shown below:

To avoid this warning immediately, you need to sign your binary with an EV (Extended Validation) code signing certificate. However, as an indie developer (self-employed), I cannot buy an EV certificate since it is only available for companies. Instead, I purchased a ‘standard’ code signing certificate.

Although this standard certificate doesn’t suppress the warning immediately, you can verify the publisher’s name by clicking ‘More info’:

Once the application has been downloaded enough times, Windows will stop displaying the warning, but this process takes a while :innocent:. The certificate is valid for three years, and I hope to upgrade to an EV certificate when it’s time for the next renewal.

So, please don’t be confused if you see the smart screen warning when installing Inkdrop!

Thank you for using Inkdrop
